Austerity - A Month of Not Spending

This is hard... this is very hard...I have mounting financial troubles, most of which (not all) are my own doing.  I recently went through the exercise of tracking my non-critical spending, and it was very eye-opening.  In one month, I spent an extra entire paycheck on things that seemed small, and in some cases, were small...until it was added up.  These minor purchases caused an overage in my checking account, and that added up to more fees and less money.  Needless to say, it has not been a banner month for me.

So why am I sharing this?  It is my intention to stop spending money for one entire month.  Nothing.  No buying at all.  Only spending money on essential items, which are in my monthly budget. This does not include those cute boots I have wanted which are now on sale.  It also does not include the mani/pedi I deserve because I work so hard.  And worse of all, it does not include ANY TAKE OUT.  No pizza, Chinese food, or KFC drive through.  No Slurpees at 7-11, and even harder to imagine, no coffee at Dunkin Donuts, and no Pumpkin Spiced Latte at Starbucks (even considering it is a seasonal treat, and if I don't buy it now, I would have to wait a whole year!).

And today is my first day of this financial diet.  My plan is to blog here each day about my experience going from a spendthrift, who works hard and deserves a night of Chow Fun and Crab Rangoon, to a sensible, practical person who only spends money on what is necessary.

Are you ready??  I ask because I am certainly not.... but ok... here we go!

Day 1 - pretty easy, as I am feeling quite like day one of a diet.  All ready to go, all excited to get "fit".  I wasn't tempted at all, and only spent money on legitimate household expenses.  I also trimmed my dog's fur myself, rather than spend the money at the groomer... Yay me!  Am going out later, so I will keep you posted as to how I did... Wish me luck!
